    License Key

Hi i recently began playing around with z-wave. I have the controlThink stick and a z-wave light switch.

I key getting this message when developing with the sdk:

This product is not licensed; please enter your license key through the License Key Manager application.

How do I get a license key?

You should get the latest SDK 1.3 beta, found here:

    Re: License Key

     Hi.

It still asks for a licence key.  See

"Error 1172 occurred at Error calling method ControlThink.ZWave.ZWaveController.Connect of ObjectId handle: 0x13631198 for obj 0x1A66917[ControlThink.ZWave.ZWaveController] in domain [LabVIEW Domain for Run] and thread 1188, (System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
Inner Exception: System.Exception: This product is not licensed; please enter your license key through the License Key Manager application.
    ) in controlthink_usage.vi"

How do I obtain a key? Theres no link for buying a licence key on your site.

    Best regards
    Anders Viljosson

Are you using a ThinkStick or someone else's USB?

    Re: License Key

I'm wondering the same thing.  The only link provided for purchasing the SDK brings you to a site that doesn't even appear to sell the SDK, it only sells ThinkEssentials.

I downloaded the 1.3 beta of the SDK for use with a z-stick, and I'm getting a licensing error as well.

My first question - will the SDK work with AEON Labs Z-Stick.  And secondly, how do I obtain a license for the SDK?  I've seen a bunch of info on how the SDK comes packaged with the thinkstick, but I couldn't even find how to purchase that!  At this point I've already invested in hardware, and all I'm looking for is the SDK.

I'm honestly surprised that it's been so difficult for me to try and purchase the license.  If finding out how to give a company money for its product is this difficult, that can't speak well for the company, or the product.

    Re: License Key

Hopefully this will clear this up for everybody:

You can no longer purchase a license key for the SDK. If you already have a license key (bought prior to mid-year 2009), you may continue to use the Z-Wave stick that works for you. If you do not have a license key for the SDK, you MUST use v1.3 beta or higher AND a ControlThink ThinkStick. You CANNOT use a Z-Wave stick from any other manufacturer.

Please direct any questions you have to Matt (CT) or myself.

     Thank you,

Thanks for clarifying. This information would be helpful on the controlthink sdk page, where it still says you can buy a license. How does this new licensing affect commercial app developers? Is the API still supported for use with other devices? And if so, how do I test with those devices? Thanks, Tony

    Re: License Key

Controlthink - Please help me get a clear picture on the legal way to distribute an application based off the Thinkessential SDK dll. I developed an application that is near completion, and from my readings,  I conclude that if I was to ship my product with the Thinkessentials v1.3 DLL included, then all the end user would have to buy is the controlthink stick hardware itself? No other Thinkessential software is required, correct?

I've been using the 1.2 dll for the past year and now that it is not available, I want to be crystal clear on the licensing. So said another way, if I was to distribute the v1.3 dll with my product, does the customer still need to activate it with any software, or is all the activation mechanism gone because of the single stick approach? (I kind of like that as I had bad results with the HA22 interface controller.)Also, any hint on when the beta version of the v1.3 will be finalized? I'm sure there are many business issues going on, but to give some comfort (and sanity) to potential developers, it would be nice to see a road map of intentions so any investment is not wasted. Also, as an example, if I were to know a new DLL version is coming out…let’s say in the next 4-8 weeks…this would affect my testing strategy.Any details would be appreciated, thanks.Robert

    Re: License Key

I am also getting this exception - but I'm not sure why...

I am using the beta SDK (1.3.0.23) and I am also using the controlthink USB dongle.

My problem seems slightly intermittent. I don't get the exception once in about 15-20 tries. All the sample code works and runs fine.

I would think that my code was doing something wrong - but as I said, it works flawlessly once in a while.

     Please help ASAP

PS (I’ve also noticed that once I get this error – even the sample code will begin to throw this error. I have to unplug and re-plug the dongle to fix this – but it still errors out once I run my code a couple times…)

Upon further investigation - I've found thatmy first request to the the SDK(first request to the SDK after reseating the dongle) always works. Subsequent requests fail.

I'm testing my application by reseating the dongle on each screen and it works great....

Just wanted to provide you with more info.

I figure with the holidays and such, they might be still tied up. I suspect many things are going on that we don't know about, but this is starting to look bad as I could not figure out how to use the product in the futre....I was starting to wonder if Zensys (Sigma) might be involved somehow with what's going on? I'll bring it up next week.

Its been 10 days now - anyone from ControlThink care to comment?

Anyone from the community have an answer to these issues?

I tried to find the problem by inspecting the API in Reflector - but it has been obfuscated, so I quickly gave up.

    Re: License Key

Either they are very busy with higher priorities or this is the end of the SDK product. It's too bad there is not an official word, but this must be the method they decided to kill the product on the vine. It must have to do something with Leviton not liking the fact that people are using this SDK to turn around and make other products that might compete with some future ideas that they are working on. This is shame as this could lead to the downfall of z-wave in general. This seems to forever cut out the hobbyist market. I also was developing a product idea using this SDK method until two weeks ago when I found the SDK was no longer for sell. I hope that Leviton has some grand plan, but this is a serious loss to both the individual and to the z-wave adoption/movement in general. I would also think it would be in the best interest for Sigma to rework their protocol in the future for more flexible options when it comes to primary/secondary controller ownership. I will probably end of getting the full Sigma development kit and compiler, but for $3500 for one, and $3000 for the other, I better make sure what I’m trying to build!Hopefully I'm wrong with the assumption that z-wave development is now in the hands of 'member only' Sigma licensed development kit owners, but this might be future. I can understand somewhat why Sigma (Leviton?) doesn’t want lots of products out there using this SDK as it sort of cuts Sigma out from promoting and selling their full development kits and might dilute product quality, but I'm not into marketing, so there might be some good rationale. Anyone that is making lots of money on a product would not discontinue it or make it hard to get unless something very big was going on. This is not something that Thinkessentials overlooked. So, with that said, maybe Thinkessential will surprise us all with a new approach, but I gave up using the product and I'm working on another approach or getting the full z-wave development SDK.If anyone wants to discuss some possibilities, send me a private message. I’m a seasoned hardware and software developer working on solid product ideas.

    Re: License Key

Word! I think the Z-wave industry would benifit greatly if they become more open. That would probably increase intrest in the Z-wave products and thus increase sales. I'm currently creating an automated home and using homeseer for laborating with Z-wave control. My plan is to control my Z-wave equipment in labview and create a user interface for the complete house that controls alarm, climate, lighting etc. Best regards /Viljo
