[ANNOUNCE] ZWave Commander - iPhone/iPod Touch ZWave Client

ZWave Commander hit the Apple Itunes AppStore as of 11/21/2008!

ZWave Commander is an ZWave Controller Client for the iPhone/iPod Touch and is a native iPhone application that allows you to control your ZWave devices anywhere in the world. Ever wanted to lock the front door while lying in your bed? How about turn the outdoor floodlights on but didn't feel like walking back downstairs to turn them on? Now you can! All you need is an ControlThink USB ThinkStick device connected to your PC and ZWave Commander will allow you to control all your ZWave devices. ZWave Commander consists of two pieces...a server piece which runs on your PC and the client piece which runs on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

The purpose of this program is simple: to allow control of your ZWave devices from your iPhone/iPod Touch with the touch of a finger.

I plan on adding the following features to the iPhone/iPod 1.1 version. For those of you that already own Zwave Commander you will receive this free and anyone who buys it now the appstore automatically upgrades you for free so don't worry!

    Features I plan to implement:

    - Scenes --- a list of Scenes number from 1-255 as this is how many are supported by Zwave. This will only work if you own Scene capable devices like Leviton Vizia RF switches and modules. The Intermatic ones don't store scene information inside of them.

    - Zones --- just a quick and dirty way of grouping multiple devices no matter what brand together. So you could have all 3 of your outdoor lights in the "Exterior Lights Zone" and from the iPhone turn them on and off as a group so you don't have to select individual devices. This is similar to Scenes above except the levels are not stored and nothing is stored in the devices themselves. So it works with my cheapo Intermatic modules. :)

    - Thermostat's --- If you have an Intermatic Thermostat that works from the 1.0 Interface. However some more and more expensive Thermostat's support features like "Cool", "Heat" "Auto" "Off" and setting the temperature. This will be supported from the iPhone interface.

Very impressive. The number of useful applications being released for the iPhone and iPod Touch, only a few months after the opening of the App Store, shows that it has a huge potential!

If I decide to to jump in and use Z-Wave devices, I was thinking of controlling everything from my PC. Since I have a laptop, I can move it from room to room to control everything as I want/need to. However, what I see here is the potential of having an efficient remote controller, always in my pocket, ready to be used. Suddenly, purchasing an iPod Touch becomes tempting...

    Thank you very much!

And you are right...i have a USB ThinkStick just plugged into my PC and I use my iPhone as my cool fancy expensive remote rather than a Logitech 890 or any of the other expensive hardware solutions.

Not to toot my own horn...but I will....I use it when i driving home from work I can connect to my home using Zwave Commander and turn on my garage and front door lights so they are on for me when i get home.  I also hooked up the Christmas tree so I can turn that on and off while lying in bed or if I am out.   Another scenario I have sold a friend on, is if you own a rental property somewhere like at the beach you could check your rental property lights and thermostat to make sure renters didn't leave your AC blasting when they checked out costing you money.

I am very happy with the way it came outand the next rev should be even better!   I bought my iPhone on August 8th and fell in love with it and immediately started writing code for it.  The iPod Touch or iPhone is simply an amazing device.  It's the PDA I have always wanted.  Incredible web browser, cool apps, great for music, syncs my contacts and calendar.  And I am not even an Apple guy, this is the first thing I have ever purchased from Apple.

Just installed on my iphone.  Very cool.  Thanks for developing.  Is there anyway to be able run simultaneously with Thinkessentials?

Unfortunately NO.  See this thread for an explanation on why ThinkEssentials and ZWave Commander cannot be run at the same time.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] ZWave Commander - iPhone/iPod Touch ZWave Client

    Hi Melloware,

I bought the Zwave Commander for my iPhone and haven't been able to get it to connect to my zwave products in my house.  I have three intermatic switches that dim that I am trying to connect. I am running VMware on my Mac.  I bought a Thinkstick and the TE software but I can't seem to get the software to work either.  I currently use a Harmony 890 and it controls all of my devices very well but I wanted to go from that to my iPhone to control my zwave devices.  I know that the 890 has to be primary because I don't have the 890pro but I don't know how to transfer control from the 890 to anything else.  I also have a HA09 controller but I have never configured it and even when I tried it didn't work. I always thought zwave was pretty simple until now.  Any ideas so I can use my iPhone?

     Thanks,

    jafo

Here is the problem.  You first need to search to forums on how to Clone your 890 to the ThinkStick.   Until you get ThinkEssentials working you won't be able to get ZWave Commander working.    ZWave Commander counts on the USB ThinkStick to have knowledge of all your devices...it doesn't necessarily need to be primary, but it must be mapped to all your devices.  I recommend searching these forums because I believe other people have done the same as you want with your Logitech 890.

The fact that ZWave hsa the concept of primary and slave controllers makes it much more complicated than X10.  And ZWave is easy in your current setup with the 890, its once you start getting into the territory you are in now that it gets complicated.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] ZWave Commander - iPhone/iPod Touch ZWave Client

I found and fixed two bugs in the ZWave Commander EXE today.

    1. I added a setting  <PollIntervalInMinutes>5</PollIntervalInMinutes> to the ZWaveCommander.exe.xml settings file so you can change your polling interval from 1 minute.

     2. I fixed a bug in the Sunrise and Sunset calculations.

You can download the latest EXE here.  It does not affect the iPhone client in any way so you can just replace your old EXE.

    Looking good!

One thing to note: I hope that you have an option somewhere to switch to Celsius. Fahrenheits have no meaning to me!

Re: [ANNOUNCE] ZWave Commander - iPhone/iPod Touch ZWave Client

Ouch....I think I assumed Farenheit since i only sell to North America not realizing.

OK I just updated the Server Side EXE to have a new setting for switching between Farenheit and Celsius.

Some options are only configured by editing the ZwaveCommander.exe.xml file.  MAKE SURE TO STOP THE EXE FIRST!

<UseFahrenheit>true</UseFahrenheit> - True for Farenheit, False for Celsius

However I think the "F" next the slider in the UI on the iPhone is hardcoded but all other messages and usages will be in Celsius properly.  Hope you can live with that for now?

Sounds good enough to me. Smile  Thanks for the quick answer.

Quick extra note: we people in Canada also use Celsius, which is why I asked in the first place!
