I am new to Z-Wave after over 20 years working with X10.  What I am interested in is the USB stick as a secondary controller that I can send commands and recieve status on a Linux platform.  I have already purchased the Intermatic starter kit. 
My eventual goal is to integrate this in to MisterHouse home automation software written in PERL.  I am trying to find out more about this product before I buy so I can see if it can be adapted to my needs.  So my questions are what is the status of Linux support and is there any documentation that I can look at before I spend the money?

Hi Chris,

For what you're looking for you'd probably more interested in a product like the Z-Wave PC SDK. Currently, it's available for .NET on Windows platforms, although we have a Mono-compatible implementation in the works (for Mac OS X, Linux, etc.)

The other solution for you is to pick up the Vizia RF Foyer or Leviton's Vizia RF serial adapter, which will let you talk some or all Z-Wave via an Ethernet/RS232 connection on your Linux machine.

 The Vizia RF Foyer really looks interesting but I cannot find any detailed information on it.  I even wrote to Leviton customer service last week to find out availability and if they have any documentation but they have not replied.  What I read was that it was to be released 2nd quarter so I would guess they are having some problems.

As for the USB Stick it also looks interesting but also lacks documentation.  Are there currently drivers for Linux and any sample code that is running on Linux or is this still in the works.

 Well I saw the Vizia RF Foyer would be out in the 2nd quarter, then it was the 3rd quarter.  Now in the middle of the 4th quarter I still can't find one.  I wonder what is wrong?

I asked my supplier about the Vizia RF Foyer. He didn't know and contracted Leviton Product Management.

He was told Q3 2008 (i.e. over a year late and almost 2 years after the initial Press Release). 

I'm not going to hold my breath and will have something else by then.
