roberts_bit:  I couldn't agree more.  ControlThink has been completely non-responsive to users questions regarding the SDK.  I gave up on using the SDk a while ago becasue of this.  Fortunately there may be another option very soon.  There is a new open source project out there called OpenZwave that will hopefully be a great replacement.  Just google it.  The author just released an initial version.

Yeah, I was working with their product for the past 4 months and was bummed that they basically terminated it. I designed a USB hardware board that was working well with their software, but now I'm looking at writing a Homeseer plugin.

I looked at using the serial zwave protocol, but I didn't like the idea of having to use the Leviton RZCOP, or some other expensive serial controller module. Yes, I think a virtual com port can be used for most other hardware, but I don't have time to dig into the intricacies just yet.

Great, thanks for the heads up on the new effort for an open source push. Is it legal to publish something like that? I was wondering the same thing for LinuxMCE (w/z-wave support), they have some good specs published. I read the license agreement from zensys (Sigma) and I noticed the keyword "interoperability" in the contract. My impression is that if you built a library that works with a z-wave controller (dongle), I thought royalties had to be paid?? It seems like it would infringe on their proprietary protocol? Maybe the hardware manufactures pays the royalties through the increase in cost of the little hardware transceivers.

You'll need to do more than just Google it.  Unfortunately someone has just started posting about his project called OpenZWave. THe REAL OpenZWave, which will be fully launched at in the next few weeks and has the backing of a major hardware manufacturer is the one hosted on Google Code.  There is a Google group for it too.  You can download the code here:

Edit: The other project have agreed to change their name, so that should mean no confusion in the long run.

I love the idea of Open Z-Wave.  I support it 100%.   I would like to have more openness for my Zwave Commander product as it is basically tied to ControlThink USB Stick right now.

Melloware, yeah, that's gotta hurt, I was kinda of wondering what people are going to do. This is a crow bar for anyone building a business based off the controlthink SDK. I’ve done embedded designs for years, but I hope to spend time working on the openZWave approach and sharpening my C++ skills. I’ll be hanging out on the forum that Mal references.
