2.1.2 Beta crashes on Win XP SP2

     Hi,

I tried to downdoal the 2.1 Beta 2 on my system and run it.  It downloaded fine but when I run it, I get an error right away:

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

I do have the .NET Framework 1.1 (as well as 2.0 and 3.0).  The 2.1 Beta 1 works fine.  Any suggestions?

    Cheers,

        Kari

    Kari,

Are you running it from a folder on your local hard drive?  Is it in a folder by itself?

     Hi Chris,

yes, it is.  I cut-and-pasted all the files and olders in the .zip to a new folder before trying to run it.  I also deleted the whole folder and re-downloaded the zip and redid the cut and paste, but got the same problem again.

    Cheers,

Any way to debug the problem, or is there any info you would like on the problem?

I had a bit of time to diagnose this further, so I ran the 2.1.0 version, which seems to work fine, and then reset the USB adapter to factory defaults.  I then killed the 2.1.0 TE and started the 2.1.1 TE.  This time I did not get an error!  I then tried to restore the setting from my backup, and again TE crashed.  So it may be something captured in the backup.  I would like for you to try this, how can I send the backup file to you (it is 27.7 KB)?

    kkarhi,

Please try the updated beta (build 3):

If that doesn't fix it, send me a PM and I'll give you a direct e-mail address where you can send the backed-up network settings file...

     Hi Chris,

ok, problem solved, no longer crashes.  Thank you to you and your team. Some observations:

    1. On first bringup the new TE could not find the adaptor?  I had to unplug it and restart TE, then plug it back in when TE asked for it.  Now it seems fine.

    2. When I tried to kill TE using  the Task Manager, the TE icon went away from the dock, but the TE process stayed and was not killable.  I had to reboot to get rid of it.

    3. When I rebooted, TE did not restart as it used to.  I had to restart TE manually.

    4. When TE came up, I found three broken devices, maybe that was why beta 2 crashed?  I was able to remove them ok.

    kkarhi:

    1. The second time you started ThinkEssentials, could it find the adapter correctly?  It may have just been a PnP anomaly.

    2. If you can't kill TE using Task Manager, try unplugging the HA22 first.  Does that work?  There's something in the drivers that doesn't want to let go with the HA22--which is normally not a problem, but you may be seeing it there.

    3. Do you have schedules enabled in the software?  That's how it decided if it needs to start up automatically.  If you do, and it's not starting up, please let me know ASAP so I can get a bug report in...

    4. TE 2.1 shows additional device types, so that may be what you were seeing.  I'm glad that you were able to remove them--you should be good to go.

     Hi Chris,

    1. I killed my  2.0 TE and started the beta 3.  It got the error about not finding the adaptor right away.  I then (ended having to kill TE by rebooting and) started the beta 1 and it got the same error.  Finally I started the 2.0 TE and it got the same error also.  Then I unplugged the HA22, restarted 2.0 TE and when it asked, plugged the adapter back in.  Then I killed the 2.0 TE and started the beta 3 and it worked. It has worked fine since then.

2 and 3. I exited from TE and rebooted my system just now and the the beta 3 started up ok (I do have schedules set up).  Not sure what the problem was earlier.  The exit menu item worked fine, but when I tried to kill the TE process with the Task Manager, TE hung and I could not kill it.  As soon as I unplugged the HA22 the TE process disappeared.
