Can't add ZIR000 as new device using ThinkEssentials V2.0 and HA22

I'm trying to add a ZIR000 infrafred motion sensor to my network using ThinkEssentials V2.0 and a HA22 as my primary controller.

No matter how often, or how long I hold the Button on the ZIR000, it is not recognized as a new device (The ThinkEssentials dialog remains saying 'Press the button on the device to add').

The ZIR000 has new batteries installed, and I do occasionally see the red 'activity' light flash.

I've installed ThinkEssentials on two different Windows XP systems and I get the same result from both. I am able to add two SH50330 lamp controllers to the netwrok without any problem, but the ZIR000 will not add. I've also tried the reset USB adapter to factory defaults- same result.

    Any suggestions?

Try "removing" the device first.  It's possible that it's setup for another network (for manufacturing testing, perhaps?) and this will reset it...

Brilliant. Thanks Chris - that was apparently the problem. I haven't worked with Z-Wave and ThinkEssentials much, so I'm just beginning to learn the ropes.

Now ThinkEssentials has indicated it added the ZIR000 to the network, but I don't see an icon for it, or any other evidence of the device. How do I go about configuring the lamps so they are controlled by the ZIR000 ? If there is some documentation that covers this in detail, please direct me there.

    fritzycat1,

ThinkEssentials 2.0 does not show battery-operated devices by default.  The free 2.1 upgrade will show these devices.  We'll be posting a beta with this feature within the week...

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm looking forward to kicking the tires on the beta version. I'll keep my eyes on the forum to see when it is available.

    fritzycat1,

We're still finishing up the link functionality (associations), but Build 1 of the ThinkEssentials 2.1 Beta should now show icons for your portable remotes and battery-operated sensors.

     Hello Chris,

    Thanks for the update!

I applied the 2.1 beta files to my V2.0 ThinkEssentials installation. On start up, thinkessentials throws an exception. I've tried to run it several times, and I've also rebooted twice. Each time I try to run it, I will get either:

    thinkessentials.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x7c9111e0"  referenced memory at "0x00000007". The memory could not be "read"

    or

thinkessentials.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services

Application has generated an exception that could not be handeded.

    Process id=0x8b4 (2228), Thread id = 0x66c (1644)

Let me know if I can provide any additional diagnostic information.

    fritzycat1,

    Two quick things:
    1. Do you have .NET 1.1 or newer installed on your PC?
    2. Don't copy over the files in your installation; just run these from a new folder on your desktop.  What folder did you put the files in?

I have several .NET versions installed - here is the scoop from Add/Remove programs:

    Microsoft .NET Framework (English) v1.0.3705

    Microsoft .NET Framework Hotfix (KB928367)

    Microsoft .NET Framework v1.1

Microsoft .NET Framework v1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)

    Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1

    Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP1

    Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5

On your advice, I re-extracted the Beta 2.1 installation to its own folder (C:\ThinkEssentials2.1B1).

I am still experiencing the same error.

Are you running on Vista or XP?  Try starting the software without your USB stick plugged in...

Re: Can't add ZIR000 as new device using ThinkEssentials V2.0 and HA22

I'm using Windows XP SP2 (with all the latest updates from Windows Update)

When I start TE without the USB Stick, I get prompted to plug in a Z-Wave USB adapter. When I plug in the HA22, TE crashes.

Note: The point at which TE crashes is inconsistent - it either crashes during the initial load splash screen (when the progress bar is under the 'h' in 'controlthink'), or it crashes immediately after the application starts (Design view screen)

Is there some way to enable 'logging' within TE to gather more information?

Re: Can't add ZIR000 as new device using ThinkEssentials V2.0 and HA22

Do you happen to have a ThinkStick or any other Z-Wave adapter there?

Also, please do this for me:
    1. Go to "\documents and settings\all users\application data\controlthink\" and rename the ThinkEssentials folder to something else.
    2. Run ThinkEssentials

If that fixes the issue, it's a data file issue.  If that doesn't fix the issue, then it's probably a driver issue.

Re: Can't add ZIR000 as new device using ThinkEssentials V2.0 and HA22

I don't have a ThinkStick or any other USB adapter.

I renamed the application data\controlthink\ThinkEssentials folder. It is still crashing. It seems to be making it past the splash screen to the Design view screen consistently now, but then it throws the exception.

I'm using the HA22 drivers found here: http://www.homesettings.com/help.html

I ran the executable through windows debugger to see if anything interesting surfaced. I can't make much of the output, but perhaps someone more familiar with the code can. Sorry to clutter the forum with this info, I could not figure out how to attach a file to a post. Here is the output:

    fritzycat1,

Please try renaming the settings folder (see details in my post two up from here), and let me know if the software loads for you.  If so, I'll grab a copy of your data file and see what's up.  The software should recover from any issues--but it sounds like that's where things are going wrong here.

Re: Can't add ZIR000 as new device using ThinkEssentials V2.0 and HA22

    I renamed the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ControlThink\ThinkEssentials" folder.

When I restart, it prompts me to enter my license key again. After I enter the key, it crashes just as before. Before it crashed, it re-created the settings folder with an 'Application.xml' and 'Application_backup.xml' file.

I can try it on another PC to see if I get the same result. However, I would like to see it working on this PC since it is my development box.
