Think Essentials with HA22 Stick - trouble running the program

Greetings- I'm new to this program and after downloading the current 2.0 version of Think Essentials and downloading the current drivers for the ha 22 stick, now when I run the program it won't start.  Instead, the screen shows "Select a network connection"  and shows a picture of the ha22 stick says "retreiving configeration".

If I pull out the stick, then put it back in, then it will let me into the program. Unfortunately, if I pull out the stick while that screen is showing about selecting a network connection, it crashes my system (vista).

I was thinking about just uninstalling everything and reinstall the program without upgrading to the newer version.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

ps - I really like the reliability of the z-wave.  Never a glich compared to all my x10 components.  I'm slowly switching to zwave as the budget permits.  It's excellent that Think Essentials wakes up the vista while sleeping to run my programs.  I'm using the ACT dimmers because they permit dimming (while programing with my primary Intermatic remote).

    Hi cstoebe,

There's a driver issue on a few computers out there which could cause this.  The old version will of course take care of your needs--but your other option is to start up the software with the "/com4" parameter, giving the software the COM port of your USB stick--and it won't do the autodetect...

Thanks for the quick response.  However, I don't know how to start the program with "/com4".  I looked in the program files but I'm not sure where to add this.  I do remember the program takes you to "add manually" when the auto detect doesn't work.  There was one line for the comm port but the 2nd line made no sence.  Anyway, any help is appreciated.

Re: Think Essentials with HA22 Stick - trouble running the program

    Hi cstoebe,

I took an interest in this thread since I saw you were running with Vista.  I am too.  I tried disconnecting my usb stick like you did and my computer crashed just like yours with the blue screen of death.  I won't be doing that again...

Since Chris hasn't had a chance to respond yet, here's how I would add the command line option:

    1. Right click on the ThinkEssentials shortcut and select Properties.
    2. Select the Shortcut tab.
    3. In the Target field, type the full path of the application for this shortcut.  Mine looks like this:

    "C:\Program Files\ControlThink\ThinkEssentials\ThinkEssentials.exe" /com4

    4. Click OK to apply.

For the sake of being thorough, I would check to see if your controller is on COM4 by going to 'Control Panel', 'System', 'Device Manager', then expanding 'Ports'.

Also note:  I couldn't edit the ThinkEssentials shortcut that was installed on my desktop during installation.  I think its a new Microsoft security thing, so I deleted that one and created a new shortcut by navigating to the ThinkEssentials installation folder, right-clicking on the .exe and creating a new shortcut.

Hope this helps.  Chris probably has a better answer...Smile

    John
